Recipient Org: Description | Cairnbaan Community Trust (Urras a'Chàirn Bhàn) was constituted as a charity (SC052905) and SCIO by the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) on October 24, 2023. It represents people living in postcode areas PA31 8BA, 8SQ, 8SJ, 8UP, 8UE, 8UH, 8UF, 8SX and 8SP. Its main purpose is to undertake initiatives which benefit the people of Cairnbaan, making the village an even better place for its residents to live and for visitors to enjoy. Cairnbaan is a village with about 245 residents and there have been workers cottages here since the 1800s. The population expands from Easter into the summer months with visitors to holiday homes, rented and Airbnb accommodation situated along both banks of the Crinan Canal, sailors berthing on the canal, walkers and cyclists. Swimmers, paddlers and paddle boarders use the local Loch a?Bharain, which is also the launching site for Mid Argyll Radio Sailing www.midargyllradiosailing.org.uk. Visitors come to see the cup and ring sites adjacent to the village and to relax in beautiful surroundings. In April 2023 a public meeting was held in the Cairnbaan Hotel to explore the possibility of an approach to Forestry and Land Scotland to take into community ownership two forestry buildings at Lock 8. Until that time there was little recent community activity. The meeting was attended by 40 people and the idea for the building and the establishment of a Community Trust received widespread support. The need for these buildings has been exacerbated by the unfortunate closure of the hotel in December 2023. It was the heart of the village, a social meeting point for locals and visitors and a place for music and cultural activities. Work to establish the Cairnbaan Community Trust has continued, with gaining charitable status, the appointment of seven trustees and a drive for membership. The Trust has won resources from MacKenzie Construction for two local initiatives which are now in place - the replacement of fencing at a playpark and a community notice board. A website for the Trust is under construction and can be seen at cairnbaancommunitytrust.org. Two short videos have been made by a local resident, one about the forestry buildings and another about the winner of a logo competition for the Trust carried out with pupils at Lochgilphead High School These can be viewed on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/RPa8glO2B1g?si=WDg_Nki4fT-rqflKt and https://youtu.be/NrhCN_woXiA?si=GDAWhka4hWdwkeUY Our current goal is to create a hub for the community where we can provide space for social meeting, co-working and community activities. By doing this we hope to reduce isolation in the community, improve community life and promote the cultural, environmental and historic heritage of the area. Whatever the outcome for the buildings, Cairnbaan Community Trust is becoming an established organisation which will be able to support our village as it moves forward making a contribution to reducing isolation and improving community life. Cairnbaan is at a significant point in its development and what happens in the next year will determine development of the Community Trust and what sustainable resources can secured for residents and visitors. |
