Leasanan dha Luchd-Ionnsachaidh (360G-BNG-MPG-2027-02557)
This project aims to deliver beginner-level Gaelic lessons for NHS staff, providing them with the opportunity to learn the language in an accessible online environment. Classes will be delivered by an external tutor twice a week in four 10-week blocks, with two concurrent classes of 20 learners each, enabling more staff to participate. Lessons will be scheduled to align with school term times for convenience and continuity. The classes will be open to all NHS Highland staff who are complete beginners, and participation will be free of charge to them. The course will follow the established Speak Gaelic modules, ensuring that learners are equipped to continue their studies through Highland Council lessons once they complete the beginner program offered by us. By focusing solely on beginners, the project addresses the high demand for entry-level Gaelic learning. We explored the classes already established by Highland Council, however they currently have a substantial waiting list for beginner classes and were unable to support an intake of NHSH colleagues. This, along with feedback from our Gaelic Staff Network, highlights the great need for more beginner classes at an affordable cost. The primary beneficiaries of this project are patient-facing staff members, who will gain practical Gaelic skills to enhance communication with patients. This is particularly valuable for patients living with dementia, many of whom have returned to Gaelic as their primary language. By supporting staff in learning Gaelic, the project will improve patient experience, foster culturally responsive care, and strengthen staff confidence in using the language in everyday healthcare settings. Overall, the project seeks to provide flexible access to beginner Gaelic education within the NHS, creating a sustainable pathway for staff to continue learning while directly benefiting patient care.
