Recipient Org: Description | Pimlico Opera aims to use music and drama to advance personal development, particularly with younger people. Artistic excellence is an essential part of achieving this aim. The organisation was started by Wasfi Kani OBE in 1987, registered as a charity in 1991, and specialised in performing in unusual places - hospitals, wonderful country houses, banks, prisons. Today the charity only works in prisons and in primary schools. Annually it stages a production in an English prison over a period of two or three weeks, working with prisoners and staff and using inmates as performers and contributors to the production wherever possible. The evidence is that prisoners gain immeasurably from these collaborations. Since 1991 Pimlico Opera has completed 22 prison projects. There was a BBC documentary about the work in prison which won a nomination for a BAFTA award. It also runs the Primary Robins programme, to encourage singing in primary schools. The project was started in September 2013, when 380 disadvantaged primary-school children in Hampshire began participating. In the academic year 2016-2017 the project was running in Hampshire, Durham, Nottingham and Surrey. The charity is governed by a board of 6 trustees and employs 10 part-time staff. It has two associated charities, Grange Park Opera and The Grange Park Opera Endowment Fund. |
