Recipient Org: Description Founded in 1969, The Compassionate Friends is the only national UK charity offering peer-to-peer support, from bereaved parent to bereaved parent. Support, friendship and compassion are offered to parents and families that have suffered the death of a child, of any age from any cause, via a network of volunteers who themselves are bereaved parents. Whether babies, toddlers, teenagers, young adults or mature adults, they are all someone’s children. No-one expects their children to die before they do; yet this happens every year to thousands of families, who then face a future in which their lives have been changed for ever. Bereaved parents suffer multiple trauma. Their world changes overnight. Many experience isolation due to the loss of family and friends; the loss of financial security if one or both parents cannot work for a period; the loss of a close relationship with a partner or spouse. It can feel like multiple amputations with so much rupture. This is where volunteers from The Compassionate Friends, themselves bereaved parents, can support people during this traumatic time and beyond and can play a role in helping bereaved parents re-enter the wider world. Many people who have suffered the loss of a child feel a bond with others in the same situation and wish to extend the hand of friendship and comfort. The Compassionate Friends offers support, both directly to bereaved families, and indirectly by fostering understanding and good practice amongst professionals concerned with child death and by increasing public awareness. The Compassionate Friends offers the following support: • National helpline – over 3,000 calls annually • Online forum via the website and private Facebook groups – over 4,000 members • Local support groups – 80 around the country with an average of 10 members per group, including three support groups in Surrey • Weekend gatherings and retreats – benefiting around 1,000 people a year. These include a national gathering, a Scottish gathering, a weekend for newly bereaved parents, a weekend for parents bereaved by suicide and addiction, a weekend for bereaved siblings (the forgotten bereaved), a weekend for childless parents, and local one-day supportive events around the country. • Sibling support – specialist meetings and retreats • Postal library service – over 2,000 books serving around 900 requests a year
