Recipient Org: Description The National Autistic Society, a national charity founded by parents in 1962, runs a wide range of services such as schools, clubs and centres for adults. It has over 20,000 members, 100 branches, and works in partnership with more than 50 local autism societies. The NAS exists to champion the rights and interests of all people with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD’s) and to ensure that they and their families receive quality services appropriate to their needs. The NAS is a charity and company limited by guarantee and is overseen by 15 Trustees. The National Autistic Society - Surrey Branch (NAS Surrey) is a volunteer-run support group founded by parents in 1995. The branch supports families who have children or adults with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). NAS Surrey has over 1500 members and is free to join. The branch holds regular meetings and organises social events, courses, local coffee mornings and special interest groups, and represents parents in meetings with health, education and social services. It also hosts an active Yahoo! online forum, and produces newsletters every 2 months for members. Parents get to know each other at support groups (usually monthly) all over Surrey, and at ‘Parents of Girls Group’, ‘Dad's Group’, ‘Mum’s (Evening) Groups’, ‘Parents of Adults Groups’, and ‘Spouses & Partners Group’. The branch is managed by a committee of 9.
