Recipient Org: Description Scouts is a national organisation dedicated to giving young people the opportunity to have opportunities and experiences not normally open to them. 2nd Godalming meets in the centre of the town and has a very mixed demographic with young people from the centre of town, Ockford Ridge and Aarons Hill as well as other areas of the town. We are open to boys and girls, abled and less abled, all ethnicities and from all religions and none. We are mindful that some of our young people come from less advantaged areas and operate a hardship fund which means that no young person will lose out on uniform, attending camps of other activities due to a lack of funding in the family home. Although times have changed since the start of Scouting (and Scouts has changed with them) the core values remain as strong today as ever. As Scouts we are guided by these values: Integrity - We act with integrity; we are honest, trustworthy and loyal. Respect - We have self-respect and respect for others. Care - We support others and take care of the world in which we live. Belief - We explore our faiths, beliefs and attitudes. Cooperation - We make a positive difference; we cooperate with others and make friends. In a society where such values are perhaps considered old-fashioned, the popularity of Scouts is increasing year on year. Parents and carers seem to be realising that the values are even more relevant today when young people have so many calls on their time - social media - screen time - as well as school and other pursuits. At 2nd Godalming, we aim to give Beavers and Cubs (and from 2020, Scouts) * at least two camp experiences every year * experience a range of activities, inside and outside * the opportunity to meet a personal challenge * to gain challenge and activity badges which include a huge range of skills including arts and crafts, physical activities, more cerebral activities and - of course - outward bound activities * to learn skills for life which include simple sewing, healthy eating and cooking, staying safe (online and in real life) and much more * to learn the importance of interacting with and supporting the local community. Our young people participate in fund-raising for e.g. The Dan Eley Trust, the Shoebox appeal. They visit care homes and bring great pleasure to the residents. They participate in community events such as Remembrance Day, * to learn about and respect all faiths and none and including visits to community faiths (the past year including Quakers, Ladywell Convent, the Woking Mosque). * to participate in links with Scouts in other countries and the challenges they may meet - for our younger members this is mainly through a Jamboree over the Internet, but Scouts get the opportunity to travel overseas.
