| Recipient Org: Description | Watts Gallery in Compton attracts around 44,000 visitors annually and is both a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. These Arts & Crafts buildings house a collection of sculptures, paintings, drawings, photographs and ceramics. Founded in 1904, the Artists’ Village is the legacy of the pre-eminent Victorian artists George Frederic Watts (1817-1904) and his wife Mary Watts (1849-1938). Together they shared their work with disadvantaged communities and aimed to bring art to rural communities in Surrey along the principles of ‘Art for All’. The Watts Studios incorporate a new learning space to accommodate classes of 30 people. Watts Gallery also hosts temporary exhibitions and talks and runs family art workshops and art clubs. The Art for All Learning Programme reaches out to young people, families, schools, adults, university students and community groups. Central to the Art for All Learning Programme is the Community Learning Program. The program engages with vulnerable people, and a series of workshops led by professional artists provides the opportunity to develop new skills and build self-confidence. The participants can exhibit and sell their resulting work. In 2017 the exhibition was visited by 2,045 people. |
