Recipient Org: Description | Wey Kayak Club (WKC) a community sports club based at the Guildford Waterside Centre (GWC) in the heart of Bellfields, Guildford, exists to promote community participation in canoeing and kayaking. It was established in 1972 and has produced a number of GB international sprint kayakers over the last 40 years. With over 400 members WKC has a thriving youth section and is undertaking a major schools outreach exercise as part of the British Canoeing Talent Club Partnership programme. This builds upon the club’s existing schools programme which sees 3 or 4 schools a year undertake kayaking. For the first time WKC has taken on two paid coaches (previously the club relied entirely on volunteer coaches) to put together a professional coaching structure that handles the need from beginner to international athlete. Previously WKC was an unincorporated Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC), but is now a newly registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) which anticipates transferring the assets of the CASC in March. WKC has been awarded British Canoe Union Top Club Gold, and Sport England Club Mark accreditation. |
