Recipient Org: Description | The Children's Trust is the UK's leading charity for children with brain injury. Every 15 minutes a child in the UK has an accident or illness causing a life changing brain injury. That’s one child every 15 minutes. An acquired brain injury (ABI) can be caused by a trauma (car accident, fall or blow to the head) or a medical event (brain tumour, meningitis or stroke). The Children’s Trust helps children and young people from all over the country that have sustained a severe brain injury to make the best recovery possible. Support for children with brain injury and neurodisability is provided in three key areas: • In 1985 The Children’s Trust started the UK's first paediatric brain injury rehabilitation service and today runs the country’s largest service of its kind. At the National Specialist Centre in Tadworth, The Children’s Trust provides intensive neurorehabilitation, step-down medical and nursing care and short breaks. • Across the country The Children’s Trust supports children in their own communities through a Brain Injury Community Service. Quality online information is also provided via the Brain Injury Hub. • At The Children’s Trust School in Tadworth, education, therapy and care are provided for children and young people with a range of special educational and care needs. Last year the school had a total of 38 pupils, both residential and day pupils. Therapies which are provided by The Children’s Trust clinical staff include music therapy, play therapy and art therapy. Sports activities are also available and these can help with the rehabilitation process. The National Specialist Centre in Tadworth has up to 58 children on site at any one time, many residing in one of 7 residential houses. The Children’s Trust also offers a weekly parent and child group, Taddies, for children 0 - 5 years, as well as age-appropriate education and activities for children attending the on-site nursery in Tadworth. |
