Recipient Org: Description Watts Gallery Trust (WGT) aims to reach people in Surrey who do not have access to cultural learning, supporting them to fulfil their potential by offering them with the opportunities to learn new skills, improve their health and wellbeing, and open up new prospects for personal and career development. WGT was founded in 1905 to make art accessible and inspiring to all. Today this continues to be our guiding ideal. Located in Compton, just outside Guildford, WGT has rescued and revived Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village (WGAV) comprising four historic buildings: gallery, artists’ studio-house, chapel and pottery. These buildings house the world’s largest collection of work by the artists George Frederic Watts and Mary Watts and a rolling programme of historic and contemporary exhibitions, attracting 65,000 visitors a year. Over the past twelve years, the charity’s Art for All Learning Programme has created access to art and to craft for thousands of people across Surrey who might not otherwise have this opportunity. Working in partnership with 24 community groups, prisons, government organisations, charities and primary schools with the highest proportion of pupils eligible for Pupil Premium, WGT delivers workshops free of charge to help children, young people and adults to develop new skills, to gain a qualification, to build self-confidence and to experience how art and craft can enrich their lives including: • STAR, a programme to support pupils who struggle at school and in some cases are unable to attend. • Surrey County Council’s youth inclusion programme to provide qualifications for young people who are not in employment, education or training. • Amber, a charity which serves young people who are homeless and unemployed. • Women’s Support Centre, Woking, offering gender-specialist support services to at risk and socially isolated women. • Park Barn Centre, serving the local community in Westborough, one of the most deprived wards in Surrey. In 2019-20, WGT’s Art for All Learning programme engaged 26,597 children, young people and adults in Surrey, including 1,291 vulnerable and socially isolated people. Reports in 2017 and 2019 by Helen Bowcock underline the social value of WGAV. The 2019 report highlights that without WGT’s bold decision to raise money to save WGAV ‘we would have lost a remarkable piece of our national heritage, many people would have missed out on source of inspiration, learning and kindness. Our collective loss of a treasured community asset would have been immense.’ Reports in 2016 and 2021 commissioned by the University of Surrey conclude that WGAV provides considerable economic impact for the local area in terms of income, jobs and tourism. More importantly, beyond the economic benefits, it is the prominent social, cultural and educational impacts of WGAV that make it an exceptional asset to the people living in the local area and it plays a central role in improving community welfare.
