Purpose of Organisation | TALK aims to support people with aphasia (primarily through stroke) by enabling them to practise all aspects of communication and promote confidence in a supportive environment, leading to increased participation and independence within the community. Aphasia is an acquired communication disorder caused by damage to the language processing centres of the brain. It can affect the ability to speak, read, write and understand what is being said, and can lead to frustration, loss of confidence and social isolation. We meet our objectives by running five weekly support groups in the following locations: Guildford, Woking, Ashford and Walton-on Thames. Each session lasts 2 hours and covers topics such as art, current affairs, gardening, sport etc, or can include an external therapist or external speaker. We operate on a termly basis with approx. 35 sessions a year. Each group is run by a team of trained volunteers and they work in small groups or one to one, supporting the members throughout each session. We very much encourage peer to peer support and also the support of our member's carers. We currently have 68 members attending our groups. |
