Purpose of Organisation True Honour is a charity that helps victims of hidden crimes such as female genital mutilation (FGM), modern day slavery (MDS) and particularly, forced marriage (FM) and honour-based abuse (HBA), (referred to throughout this bid as HBA) through the provision of training to professionals who will deal with all these crimes and the support of victims, usually referred by these professionals. Our vision is to raise awareness, stop abuse, save lives and build stronger communities across the nation, in which men and women can live free from the many hidden crimes mentioned above, particularly honour-based crimes. We aim to deliver holistic, gender responsive and needs-led support directly to victims and training and awareness courses to all front-line professionals, such as police forces, legal teams, health professionals and staff of educational institutions, complemented by post-training advice and support to individual professionals. Training to professionals is delivered by our team comprising a survivor of forced marriage and honour-based abuse together with a retired senior detective who has investigated all these hidden crimes. Statistics were released recently by the Home Office of data on police recorded HBA from April 2019-2020. This report “recognises that HBA tends to be a hidden crime and victims can be reluctant to bring them to the attention of the police and other authorities”. Our work with the Crown Prosecution Service has identified a further problem of many victims not coping with the criminal justice system and cases not reaching court. Our training of a wide range of professionals helps them to understand HBA and thus give the most appropriate support as well as being able to refer victims to True Honour. Our clients will not become bystanders in their own case and thus fall out of the system. The experience of our core team (detective and survivor/witness) of obtaining a conviction in an honour-based murder case, where no body was found is key to supporting victims of these crimes in understanding the system and achieving a successful outcome. In parallel to our work with professionals we will be recruiting, training and supporting volunteers to provide advocacy and befriending to victims. The training will be led by our Founder, herself a survivor of HBA. This development will enable us to better meet the needs of BAME women and men who are victims of HBA. (See ‘Need and Disadvantage’ below). To develop our charity we will be seeking to develop a subscriber membership which will give us an additional income stream. Our central office will be developed through the recruitment of volunteers to support these aims.
