| Purpose of Organisation | Surrey Drug and Alcohol Care (SDAC) has been a registered Charity since 1986 and was originally established to provide advice and support to drug and alcohol users and their concerned friends and relatives in Surrey and surrounding areas. In 2010 Surrey DAAT (Drug and Alcohol Team) approached SDAC to create a Telephone Counselling Service to support individuals who did not engage with regular face to face counselling services, We now offer three main Services: Telephone Counselling Service (TCS), including TCS Boot Camp Service, 24 Hour freephone Helpline and Outreach Programme. The Telephone Counselling Service including TCS Boot Camp Service is completely funded through the voluntary sector and has supported between 500 and 600 people a year. Last year, 2536 counselling sessions took place, supporting over 250 people with addiction issues. To meet the demand, with the help of further funding, we are working to increase this figure year on year from 2020. Following a highly successful trial, we are also now running a TCS Boot Camp Service for those in need of more intensive therapy and support. During the Covid-19 outbreak we have also been supporting people with mild to moderate mental health issues 24 Hour Freephone Helpline - Our confidential Helpline has been funded by Surrey Public Health since its foundation. It is well known locally and open to callers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Helpline is run by fully trained volunteers working shifts so there is always a person at the end of the line. We currently have 32 active volunteers with plans to recruit and train 20 more this autumn/winter. The service offers help and support to anyone who is concerned about their own or someone else’s drug and/or alcohol problem. In 2011 SDAC was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. In addition to supporting people struggling with substance misuse, the Helpline started taking calls from people with mental health problems other than addiction in December 2018. Last year the Helpline took 923 calls. Between March and June, the number of calls to the Helpline increased by 107% on the year. SDAC also runs an Outreach Programme for Surrey schools and youth groups to raise awareness of the risks associated with drugs and alcohol and to teach them life skills such as peer resistance, self-confidence and decision making skills to equip them to make drug-free choices. Young people are often deeply affected by the drug and alcohol habits within their own circle of family and friends and we advise those affected of the support services available and show them that it is ok to ask for help when they need it. We are working to find a safe way to deliver this programme going forward, including an event next summer for 350 pupils who are most at risk of misusing drugs and alcohol and of having mental health issues. NEW!!! Since our last application we were piloting our Telephone Bootcamp Service, this service is now fully up and running as the pilot was such a success and there is a continuing demand. Bootcamp is an intense programme delivered in 22 hourly sessions of counselling, these sessions are tailored to each persons individual needs and their availability. We have also set up a Zoom therapy group called the Boot Camp Recovery Group which provides continued support at the end of the Bootcamp process. The group is only available to those clients upon completion of the Bootcamp process and takes place once a week for an hour and half. The group allows clients to stay connected to the service even if they have left one to one couselling. We are also now offering counselling to significant others. We understand that addictions can, and will, affect friends and family members at a very deep level. This service to help significant others runs over 12 counselling sessions via telephone and again is tailored to individual need. Currently 98% of those attending Bootcamp stopped drinking or using drugs. We now also offer a service called Drug Related Death/Non Fatal overdose (DRD) programme to help families and friends of addicts who have suffered the loss or near loss of a love one through their addictive behaviours. The counselling is over 12 sessions, usually once a week, and is delivered via Zoom or telephone. A loss or near loss of a person we love through addiction will generate a huge number of questions and feelings of grief, shame, remorse and fear. Our service will gently and psychologically, hold the client in the sessions and give them the space to express their feelings and thoughts. Once they complete one to one counselling, we run groups via Zoom in which they can participate if they so wish. |
