Purpose of Organisation Mission To provide truly inclusive, fun and safe places where all disabled children and young people can spend time with their friends. To offer a positive impact for families and the wider community. Our goals and values • Providing truly inclusive, fun and safe places where all disabled children and young people aged up to 18 years can spend time with their friends. • Providing a positive impact for families and the wider community alongside service delivery across South East England. • To never exclude a child or young person and ensuring services are designed to meet the needs and desires of every child and young person that uses our services. • Delivering high quality training and employment and volunteering opportunities that are developed to enhance the wellbeing of disabled children and young people. • Educating all staff to help them understand disability and take those views into society to help shape and change perception. • Leading by example and be a champion for inclusion through the offer of participation, training, information and guidance so that others can do the same. • Providing other services that enable the charity to deliver support to young people and contribute towards achieving the vision of a world where all disabled children and young people can play together freely. Challengers – established in 1979 - is committed to breaking down the barriers to play for disabled children and young people, aged 2-18, across the South East. Shockingly, 41% of parents whose disabled child attends Challengers have been excluded from other play and leisure settings. This is due to lack of appropriate facilities, staff training or negative attitudes towards disability. Our mission is to provide truly inclusive, fun and safe places where all disabled children and young people can spend time with their friends. Pre-pandemic, we operated 24 (now 17) play and youth schemes across the South East where we provide fun activities and days out for 1,400 disabled children and young people and over 140,000 hours of short breaks for their families.  As an organisation we are unique in our fully inclusive approach. If a child should come to Challengers with a care requirement that we currently do not have experience of, we will provide the training and equipment needed at no extra cost to the families. For us, there is no reason why disabled children should be denied the same opportunities as their non-disabled peers.    Every child is supported and engaged, based on their interests, not their impairments. We support disadvantaged disabled children and young people to realise their full potential. This shapes everything that happens on schemes from the activities we run, to the level of support that child needs. While their children are safely in our care, families and carers can look after their own wellbeing, catch up on chores or spend time with non-disabled siblings. Our services help support the resilience of vulnerable family units and improve quality of life in a disadvantaged section of the community.   To mitigate the risk of young people feeling isolated or lonely during lockdown, we have developed ‘Virtual Challengers’, providing online Zoom sessions for young people to see their friends and take part in fun interactive activities such as quizzes, dance workshops or reptile experiences! Although these were devised as an alternative offer for when our schemes were not able to run face to face sessions, they have proved to be so popular that we want to continue to deliver online sessions to run alongside our normal delivery!
