Purpose of Organisation 6th Staines (Christ Church) Scout Group is part of the worldwide Scouting movement, providing activities and experiences for local children aged 6 to 14 years in the borough of Spelthorne. The Group is over 60 years old, has charitable status and is run by several dedicated volunteers, some of whom have committed more than 20 years to providing Scouting activities for young people. We run a Beaver group for boys and girls aged 6 & 7; Cubs for children aged 8 - 10 years and Scouts aged 11 - 14. In total we have around 75 children on roll. We also encourage young people leaving Scouts to move onto the local Explorers Group and to support the Sections as Young Leaders. This contributes towards their Duke of Edinburgh activities. We have our own fully equipped purpose built HQ where we have climbing walls and potholing facilities, a garden, wooden gazebo, indoor kitchen, air rifle shooting and archery facilities. Scouts groups aim to help young people to learn a range of skills, enjoy new adventures, experience the outdoors, interact with others and gain confidence. 6th Staines encourages team working, problem solving and accepting physical and mental challenges to help young people reach their full potential. In 2015 the Group was invited to help pioneer more inclusive Scouting for children with disabilities, and consequently partnered with Manor Mead School for children with severe / profound and complex learning disabilities or autistic spectrum disorder to enable these children to also access and benefit from our activities, events and opportunities. Until the onset of the pandemic, a successful Beaver and Cub group was run weekly at the school and children from Manor Mead also joined the main Group, progressing through Cubs and Scouts, with one child becoming a Scout Patrol Leader despite being largely non-verbal. 6th Staines Section Leaders and their assistants are volunteers who plan an involved and interesting weekly programme of activities for the young people, presenting them with a variety of learning opportunities plus physical and mental challenges, that with encouragement and support, when they conquer the challenge it helps builds confidence and a sense of achievement. The young people work collectively and on their own to attain a range of skills and activity badges that show their achievement and development, including working towards the Queen's Scout Award - the highest Scouting attainment. As well as weekly activities at HQ, the Group also plans and executes a range of outdoor events and challenges including camping opportunities, cycling, rambling, camp fire activities and so on. The young people also have the opportunity to join in with wider Scouting Association events including Spelthorne District activities like St George's Day and Remembrance Sunday parades, District camps, County-wide camps at events like Scoutabout and even global Scouting residentials overseas as part of the World Scout Jamboree. In our experience, young people participating in Scouting develop a range of beneficial skills, confidence and physicality ahead of their non-Scouting peers. Children often arrive in Beavers presenting as quite shy and timid but with support and encouragement quickly develop greater confidence and self assuredness. As they progress through Cubs and Scouts they become adept at team working; supporting and encouraging each other, working together to tackle challenges and adapting to situations. They learn to cook, pitch tents, hike, practical bushcraft skills, home skills, health & safety awareness and more. They are encouraged to show their peers their home interests and hobbies, to read, play music, understand how to care for pets, try creative activities and more. We relish the opportunity to offer the young people physical play and challenges and are particularly lucky to have the wall climbing and pot holing facilities on site which encourage the young people to overcome their fears and take pride in their achievements, building their confidence. They participate in team competitions including District Swimming competitions, Orienteering and Hiking challenges, Archery and Air Rifle shooting etc. The Scouting Association aims to help young people develop the skills they need for school, college, university, the job interview, the important speech, the tricky challenge and the big dreams: the skills they need for life. As a Group we come together for social evenings including adult leaders and volunteers' skittle evening, an annual Carol Concert where the young people all participate and the Scouts prepare all the Christmas refreshments, plus other opportunities for families to interact with the Group and enjoy our facilities. We have an annual Activity Day when we showcase all the opportunities available to 6th Staines young people and celebrate the past year's achievements, awarding Beaver, Cub and Scout of the Year.
