IMPACT - Primary Issue Mental health
Purpose of Organisation Mary Frances Trust (MFT) was set up in 1994, and supports people who are experiencing any type of mental and emotional wellbeing difficulties. We offer support through these channels: • Community Connections * • GPimhs • SUN • Safe Haven • In-Reach • Recovery Connect • Information/Advice We operate in Surrey Downs, which includes Mole Valley, Epsom & Ewell, Banstead and East Elmbridge. People can refer themselves for the service by completing a simple form on the website, or they can be referred by a healthcare professional or by a family member or friend (with their permission). MFT not only supports people with severe and enduring mental ill health, but also supports those without a formal diagnosis who may need short-term support through a difficult period. Once the referral is received, staff work with the client to devise a plan consisting of steps towards their recovery. This can include any of the programme of physical activities/wellbeing courses/arts & crafts/interest groups/peer support groups as either face-to-face and/or online courses, as well as one-to-one support. We also offer information and advice with practical elements of life, for example benefits, debt, housing, routes to education and employment/work, including help with sourcing voluntary roles. During the lock down period many of the activities were transferred online, but were still combined with one-to-one support via telephone and/or video link. This proved so popular that we have kept the online offer, resulting in a hybrid approach to our calendar of activities. GPimhs is our GP Integrated Mental Health Service. Adults (18+) living in Surrey experiencing a wide and potentially complex range of mental health and emotional wellbeing issues can now benefit from specialist support available at GP practices or in the community. Patients from participating GP practices are offered extended consultation times, quick and easy access to practical advice and tailored support for their mental health needs from our Mental Health Practitioners or Community Link Workers. SUN (Service User Network) is our community-based peer support service for people experiencing difficulties with complex emotions that affect how they feel, cope with life and manage relationships. SUN has open access, with no time limit on membership, and is facilitated within a group setting. It is based on therapeutic community principles using cognitive and psychodynamic theory, and the groups are supported by both a peer support worker with lived experience and a registered clinician. MFT also run a Safe Haven in Epsom, which is open for people in crisis 365 days of the year, from 6pm-11pm. This service continued throughout lock down and now has a “virtual safe haven” for those who are unable to leave home. The In-Reach Service operates in hospitals, and aims to smooth the transition of the patient from the ward to the community, therefore reducing the chance of repeated readmissions. This is achieved by providing a person-centred wrap around provision, aimed at addressing the individual needs of each patient before and after hospital discharge. Recovery Connect supports individuals to develop resilience and manage their mental health more effectively, enabling them to transition to and engage with community services rather than solely relying on crisis resources. The Recovery Connect team work assertively in an outreach capacity with a caseload of individuals for up to 3 months who are identified through meetings with and referrals from SPA Crisis line. We launched the Mary Frances Trust Advisory Group in 2017. This is a group of individuals who have experience of using mental health services, and they work together to co-design everything that happens here at our charity. MFT is heavily influenced by current theories of co-production, where professionals and volunteer advisors work together to design, improve and review our services. MFT consistently challenges stigma attached to mental illness and raises awareness of the importance of looking after mental wellbeing. We believe anyone experiencing any kind of mental or emotional health issues should not be afraid to ask for help, should receive appropriate support for as long as they need, and feel inspired to develop the skills that will help them to restore and maintain their own wellbeing. We endeavour to lead and co-ordinate the development and delivery of first-class, voluntary mental health services in Surrey, and to maintain sufficient funding streams to be able to provide person-centred services to people experiencing any kind of emotional or mental health issues. *In 2013, we succeeded with our bid to become one of the three main providers for Community Connections, offering seamless first-class mental health services to adults living in Surrey. Each provider covers a different area of Surrey. We are the lead provider for Community Connections' mental health services for Surrey Downs, which include Mole Valley, Epsom & Ewell, Banstead and East Elmbridge. NEW as of 18.01.23 Mary Frances Trust (MFT) is a mental health and emotional wellbeing charity in Surrey. Based in Leatherhead, we were set up in 1994 and offer a variety of face-to-face and online services to adults (16+) who would like to restore and/or maintain their mental and emotional wellbeing. No clinical diagnosis is needed, clients can self-refer (or a family member or friend can refer them with their permission) and our services are free of charge. We run services in Banstead, Elmbridge, Epsom & Ewell and Mole Valley. Our services include individual support & goal setting; wellbeing courses, activities and interest groups; peer support and self-help groups; men’s peer support; young-people groups; LGBTQ+ peer support; menopause support; ESOL English lessons for clients from our local Bangladeshi community to support them with their confidence in every day interactions & prevent social isolation; practical advice and information (offering support with benefits, debt, housing and routes to education/employment) & we also offer a variety of volunteering opportunities at MFT. As well as delivering these services via Community Connections Mental Health Service, which we are lead provider for Surrey Downs Integrated Care Partnership, our services include: • GPimhs (GP Integrated Mental Health Service – offering specialist 1-2-1 support for patients at designated surgeries) • A Safe Haven in Epsom (offering daily crisis support 6-11pm) • Service User Network (SUN) run in conjunction with Surrey And Borders Partnership (SABP) NHS Trust - a community-based peer support with lifetime membership for complex emotions, often associated with personality disorder. • Recovery Connect (helping mental health patients transition from the hospital ward back to their community) • In-Reach (supporting clients to rely less on crisis services and use other community-based support services). Importantly, all of our services are designed through co-production via our Advisory Group, which is made up of adults with lived-experience. We also now employ more “lived experienced” practitioners to support our clients - these are people bringing their own experience of mental health to their roles, adding an extra dimension to our services.
