Purpose of Organisation Re-engage is a charity dedicated to tackling social isolation and loneliness in older people living alone, with a special focus on the over 75s. We have been providing social contact for older people for over 50 years and develop networks which have a remarkable impact on well-being. Our recent monitoring results in December reported that 92% of older people feel that joining our charity has had a positive impact on their lives. We inspire and enable meaningful connections and shared experiences within communities across the UK for older people facing loneliness and social isolation. Our volunteers work together to create better communities and help to enrich the lives of our members by giving them something to look forward to. Older people who may have felt very alone, now feel valued as individuals, continue to form friendships, and have networks that give support. We make sure that people know they are important well into old age. Respectful, determined, warm, pioneering, and local: we bring generations together. Our vision is a world where no one is too old to make friends and enjoy social interaction. Our mission is to work within communities to end social isolation and loneliness in older people. More than a million older people in the UK say they go for over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member. According to Surrey Community Foundation’s insight into loneliness and isolation, there are currently around 232,000 people aged 65 and over living in Surrey. A third of residents aged 65+, almost 76,000 older people in the county, live alone. The majority of these older people who live alone, some 47,000 people, are amongst the older age range of 75 and over. According to Age Concern, there are 77,000 older people in Surrey experiencing loneliness, with 35,000 of those being in the 80+ age group. Since the pandemic, we can safely assume these figures and the scale of the problem have increased. The majority of those who use Re-engage services fall into the 'oldest old' category; almost half are in their 80s, 20% aged 90 and above, with an average age of 86. Re-engage now has three core and free services tackling loneliness and isolation: 1. Call Companions: launched as a direct response to the Covid-19 pandemic, this telephone befriending service is non-contact so enables us to alleviate loneliness and check on the older person’s well-being without putting their health at risk. 2. Social groups: typically monthly tea parties hosted in the homes of our volunteers with transport provided. Our groups are currently suspended, and volunteers are calling their older guests regularly until groups reopen. 3. Community Christmas: a project that provides companionship during the festive season by matching older people in need of company with a telephone caller or local event. With the population ageing, the pandemic and public sector services oversubscribed, we know that our work is more crucial than ever. Over the past year: • We have worked with 9,000 older people UK-wide • Involved over 14,000 dedicated volunteers • We have extended the hand of friendship to thousands through telephone befriending
