Purpose of Organisation Recently winning 'YMCA of the Year' out of 118 YMCAs across England and Wales, we are a local charity that has been responding to the needs of individuals and communities for over 150 years. Our mission is to provide opportunities for people to develop their full potential, focusing on the vulnerable and disadvantaged. We offer a wide range of services to support community needs. They are concentrated in areas of socio-economic disadvantage and include play and leisure schemes for children and young people, including those with disabilities, family support services, youth work, supported housing, mental health counselling and health and wellbeing programmes for all ages, and volunteering. In 2019/20, over 14,000 people benefited from our services, including 4,588 with additional needs and 7,920 under 16s. With years of experience, we place an emphasis on ensuring that the services we provide are truly what the community needs. Our main focus is on the impact we have on the young people we work with. One such example is Theo, 12, who is autistic spends much of his time in the role of a young carer to his five-year-old brother Toby, who also has autism. He enjoys his lessons at school, is eloquent, musical, interested in reading and finds it easier to communicate with adults than with his peers. When his mother Nicole heard about the YMCA East Surrey youth club sessions in Merstham through social media, she was keen for Theo to give them a try, get out of the house and interact more with others. “We live in a stressful household and Theo has a lot on his plate for a boy of his age,” says Nicole. “Out of necessity, much of my time is taken up with looking after his brother and so I can’t give Theo as much attention as I would like. There’s not a lot else to do in this area for children of Theo’s age, so my hope was that the youth club sessions would give him the chance to mingle and make some local friends.” At YMCA East Surrey we seek to be a second home to families like Nicole’s. We are like the grandparents or siblings stressed parents can turn to when they need support because as the saying goes: ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’ There have been no large changes to our overall aims and objectives: YMCA East Surrey still works to transform the lives of children, young people and the whole community with a mission is to provide opportunities for people to develop to their full potential with a focus on those who are vulnerable or face disadvantage. Our services still comprise youth and family work, emotional wellbeing and mental health counselling for young people, children’s playschemes, including schemes for children with disabilities, supported housing for young homeless people, health and wellbeing for all ages and abilities, and volunteering.    NEW as of 23.01.23 YMCA East Surrey is a local charity working to transform the lives of children, young people and the whole community. Our mission is to provide opportunities for people to develop to their full potential with a focus on those who are vulnerable or face disadvantage. Our charitable objectives have not changed; they are to provide recreational facilities and leisure activities, education, relief of need from hardship and residential accommodation for those in need. As a result, we offer a wide range of services comprising youth and family work, emotional wellbeing and mental health counselling for young people, children’s playschemes, including schemes for those with disabilities, supported housing for young homeless people, health and wellbeing for all ages and abilities, and volunteering. In 2021/22 we supported almost 13,000 people, including 3,824 with additional needs and 9,750 children and young people aged under 30. Our emphasis is on young people; we help them to believe in themselves, support them to achieve their goals and inspire them to be the best they can be. We have a new five-year strategy and our priorities include expanding our services to reach more people, championing inclusivity in all our work, building on our culture of voluntary action, prioritising the housing needs of young people and reducing our carbon footprint.

We provide dedicated after school and holiday play schemes for children and young people with a disability across various locations in Surrey and West Sussex. The Sovereign Centre in Reigate, along with our Merstham Hub, are home to our popular and affordable Pre Schools delivering Early Years Education for children aged 2-5. We also offer support to young adults with a disability helping them to learn social and life skills through sport, youth and volunteering opportunities. Other services for young people include youth clubs and detached youth work in areas identified as anti-social behaviour hot spots. We also deliver a range of projects that provide free support, activities and counselling sessions to young people with mental health issues. YMCA East Surrey has been providing supported housing to young homeless people aged 16-30 for 20 years. Since 2019/20 we have increased the number of bed spaces we provide from 51 to 69 and we now support over 130 young homeless people per year with safe and affordable accommodation as well as support with the challenges they face including finding training and employment. The aim in our strategic plan is to have 100 bed spaces by 2027 in order to house more young people at risk of homelessness and we are currently refurbishing a house in Redhill to provide 6 more rooms in a shared house, which will bring our total bed spaces to 75.
