Purpose of Organisation | Sebastian’s Action Trust (SAT) was founded in 2004 by Jane Gates, a bereaved mother carrying out the dying wish of her nine-year-old son, Sebastian, to create a space for families of seriously-ill children to spend time together. SAT exist to support families of life-limited children aged 0-19, from diagnosis, through treatment and beyond, by listening and responding to their unmet needs. SAT have grown to become a leading provider of advocacy, care and support in the South East, fulfilling an unmet need for social palliative care for seriously-ill children and their families. SAT are increasingly acknowledged within the NHS and social services as a specialist provider of support, demonstrating clear and significant public benefit through outreach services and respite care. SAT identify the needs of each family and work with them through the stress of coping with a seriously-ill child, and the financial, practical and emotional burden that puts on the whole family. The charity offers an ever-evolving programme of support, completely free of charge, to families of children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, aged 0-19. The holistic model of care provides family respite in addition to emotional, social and practical support that is flexible, adapting to the needs of each family in a way that always respects choice, individuality and the implications of living with a new and often unwelcome ‘normal’. To help life-threatened children and their families, Sebastian’s Action Trust provides: 1 Outreach family support to provide practical, financial and emotional support 2 Outreach youth support to improve mental health and wellbeing for the sick child, their siblings and bereaved siblings 3 Events, activities and workshops to reduce social isolation and build resilience to face an uncertain future 4 Unlimited bereavement support for as long as the family need it |
