Purpose of Organisation Amber supports some of the most vulnerable young people in Surrey - those that are homeless and unemployed. We provide a temporary, safe place to live with up to 30 other young people at our residential centre in Ockley. There – in a calm and nurturing environment – we provide a mix of support, structure, new experiences and training that builds their motivation, self-discipline and skills. We help the young people address any specific issues that may be holding them back, to move on from their troubled pasts and to find the self-belief and determination to move forward. Specifically our Team Leaders provide a mix of one-to-one sessions, workshops and teaching that covers areas from literacy, numeracy, art/music, personal care, counselling, access to AA/CA, dealing with anxiety / stress, City & Guild or AQA qualifications, diet, fitness and volunteering. The aim is provide the knowledge, skills and experience for young people to successfully move into employment, education or training. We are widely known to be an organisation that will take on those for whom other interventions have not worked, or whose needs exceed those accepted by other organisations. Hence we often fill a gap in provision, both locally and regionally. Unfortunately the challenge is getting greater, 120,000 young people in the UK sought help from their council as they were homeless or at risk from homelessness. Once homeless, it's often a downward spiral - it becomes incredibly difficult to get back on your feet, get a job or go to college. The combination of poor qualifications and high support needs often makes it difficult for them to find work or secure a college or training placement. Hence there is a strong correlation between homelessness and unemployment that we aim to address. Our ultimate aim is to help the young people move successfully into employment, education or training and into sustainable independent accommodation. By providing the young people with a routine and structure, we can help them move on from their pasts and embrace an optimistic future. Jodie, one of our former residents is now training to be dental nurse had this to say about Amber "I really wouldn’t be where I am today without Amber. It builds your confidence and belief in what you can achieve and teaches you how to deal with other people. And it gets you into a structure, which is something that really helped me – I was pretty much nocturnal before that. I’ve always liked learning and I’m now doing a full-time apprenticeship and hoping to complete my diploma in the minimum 12 months. I love my job and I’m planning to stay there but one day I’d like to study to be a dentist, if I can ever afford it.” NEW as of 24.04.23 Amber supports some of the most vulnerable young people in Surrey - those that are homeless and unemployed. Purpose of Organisation The Amber Foundation is a registered charity, established in 1995 to provide help to homeless unemployed young people, supporting them to gain the motivation, confidence, and skills they need to gain and sustain employment and accommodation. Almost all the young people with whom the Foundation engages (known as 'Amberteers') have misused drugs or alcohol and/or been involved in crime; they may have no qualifications and low basic skills and are subsequently lacking in self-esteem. The charity runs three residential centres – this application relates to Farm Place in Ockley which provides a temporary, safe place to live for 27 young people. The combination of poor qualifications and high support needs often makes it difficult for them to find work or secure a college or training placement.. By providing the young people with a routine and structure, Amber can help them move on from their past. Amber helps the young people address any specific issues that may be holding them back, to move on from their troubled pasts and to find the self-belief and determination to move forward. Team Leaders provide a mix of one-to-one sessions, workshops and teaching that covers areas from literacy, numeracy, art/music, personal care, counselling, access to AA/CA, dealing with anxiety/stress, qualifications, diet, fitness and volunteering. NEW as of 2023/24 DR4 More than 1,500 young people experience homelessness in Surrey each year (Youth Homeless Databank). The causes of youth homelessness are varied and complex. They include family breakdown, poor mental health, substance abuse, loss of employment and/or private tenancy, leaving care and prison release. The Amber Foundation provides a residential centre for homeless young people from a disadvantaged background, where we provide a safe temporary home in Ockley and the practical support needed for the young people to repair their shattered lives. In a calm and nurturing environment – we provide a mix of support, structure, new experiences and training that builds their motivation, confidence, self-discipline and skills. We help them address any specific issues that may be holding them back, helping them to move on from their troubled pasts and find the self-belief and determination to move forward. Our approach is holistic allowing the young people to build the skills and self-confidence to transform their lives. The focus at the centre is on four themes; Health & Wellbeing, Personal Development, Independent Living and Education & Employability. Our ultimate aim is for each young person to move into employment or education and into safe, sustainable independent accommodation.
