Purpose of Organisation The Afghanistan and Central Asian Association (ACAA) is an award-winning charity founded by Dr Nooralhaq Nasimi, who arrived as a refugee in the back of a refrigerated container with his young family in 1999. ACAA promote social and economic integration of an increasing number of Afghan, Ukrainian and other refugees. They use a community development ethos to support the development of their potential within a mutually supportive framework and work with a wide range of partners to reach vulnerable individuals in some of the most disadvantaged areas of Surrey. ACAA services are vital in supporting vulnerable individuals to improve their wellbeing, independence, aspirations and integration. Our core services include: • Education, training, and development activities – ESOL, digital education, IT skills training, STEM education, 1:1 careers and business advice. • Women’s empowerment - providing refugee women with a safe and friendly space to increase their knowledge of UK systems. • Legal advice to Advice Quality Standard and OISC accreditation, focusing mainly on immigration, housing, business and employment issues. • Mental health and wellbeing support through workshops and one-to-one counselling sessions. • Cultural events based on refugee heritage. Our annual Refugee Week Festival is a two-day arts festival at Gunnersbury Park focussing on Afghan and Ukrainian culture and attracts a crowd of up to 10,000 people. • Volunteering and mentoring for young people – offering internships for refugees • Football, Cricket, Yoga and Zumba sessions for disadvantaged, vulnerable and excluded women and girls ACAA’s work has been recognised with a range of prestigious awards including Queens Award for Voluntary Services, Refugee Support Service of the Year 2019, whilst Dr. Nasimi received an MBE in January 2023. All of these are underpinned by a dedicated team of paid staff and volunteers offering mentoring, support, assistance, translation and interpretation where needed.
