Purpose of Organisation | TALK supports people with aphasia (primarily resulting from stroke) by enabling them to practise all aspects of communication and promote confidence in a supportive environment, leading to increased participation and independence in the community. Aphasia is an acquired communication disorder that affects talking, understanding, reading and writing. It can lead to frustration, loss of confidence and social isolation. We fulfil our aims by providing weekly support groups at four locations: Guildford, Woking, Ashford and Walton-on-Thames. Each session lasts 2 hours, and covers topics such as art, current affairs, gardening, etc, and can include an external speaker or therapist. Sessions are planned to encourage conversation and discussion amongst members, and members are encouraged to contribute their ideas to termly programme planning and delivery of sessions. Each group is run by a team of volunteers trained in supported conversation techniques by experienced speech and language therapists. They work in small groups or one-to-one, supporting the members throughout each session. We very much encourage peer-to-peer support, and also the support of our members’ carers. For those members who are unable to attend, we also offer home visiting services. The carer is also supported because they receive a break from caring, fostering independence for both parties during this respite period. |
