Programme Strategic Transformation Programme
Purpose of Organisation YMCA East Surrey is a local charity and company limited by guarantee established in 1999 working to transform the lives of children, young people and the whole community. Our mission is to provide opportunities for people to develop to their full potential with a focus on those who are vulnerable or face disadvantage. Our charitable objectives are to provide recreational facilities and leisure activities, education, relief of need from hardship and residential accommodation for those in need. As a result, we offer a wide range of services comprising youth and family work, emotional wellbeing and mental health counselling for young people, children’s playschemes, including schemes for those with disabilities, supported housing for young homeless people, health and wellbeing for all ages and abilities, and volunteering. NEW as of 2023/24 Care Leavers Round YMCA East Surrey is a vibrant charity that has been actively supporting the local community since 1871. Our mission is to help people to believe in themselves, support them to achieve their goals and inspire them to be the best they can be by providing services that focus on those who are vulnerable, have a disability or face disadvantage. Our services are inclusive for people of all ages and abilities, spanning a diverse range of projects across health and wellbeing, housing and services for children and young people. In 2022/23 12,706 people benefitted from our services, including 4,362 with some kind of special need from across all ages, and 5,721 children and young people aged under 16. 1,862 local people also took part in one of our Challenge events, including running, cycling and walking events, to raise money for our work. The services we offer are wide ranging, including sport and fitness, supported housing, youth work, mental health counselling, children’s playschemes and volunteering. We have a wealth of experience supporting the whole community to lead healthy, active lives and are specialists in providing affordable and accessible services, including sports and physical activity for people with a disability or chronic health condition and the elderly at our Sports Centre in Redhill and in the wider community. We also have an excellent track record of delivering play and leisure schemes for children and young people, including those with a disability. Our Sports Centre offers after school and holiday clubs for the under 12s – rated Good by Ofsted. We provide dedicated after school and holiday play schemes for children and young people with a disability across various locations in Surrey and West Sussex. The Sovereign Centre in Reigate, along with our Merstham Hub, are home to our popular and affordable Pre Schools delivering Early Years Education for children aged 2-5. We also offer support to young adults with a disability helping them to learn social and life skills through sport, youth and volunteering opportunities. Other services for young people include youth clubs and detached youth work in areas identified as anti-social behaviour hot spots. We also deliver a range of projects that provide free support, activities and counselling sessions to young people with mental health issues. YMCA East Surrey has been providing supported housing to young homeless people aged 16-30 for 20 years. Since 2019/20 we have increased the number of bed spaces we provide from 51 to 69 and we now support over 130 young homeless people per year with safe and affordable accommodation as well as support with the challenges they face including finding training and employment. The aim in our strategic plan is to have 100 bed spaces by 2027 in order to house more young people at risk of homelessness and we are currently refurbishing a house in Redhill to provide 6 more rooms in a shared house, which will bring our total bed spaces to 75.
