Recipient Org: Description The Pro-Active Community was founded in 2015 by a small group of people with learning disabilities, in response to feeling unheard and a lack of peer-led advice and support. They created a peer-led advocacy group to amplify their voices and tackle societal barriers which hold back disabled people. Despite its small beginnings, the group has now grown to 40 members and won a National Learning Disability & Autism Award in 2018. We became an independent charity in 2020. Mission: Our mission is to create a world where people with learning disabilities are listened to, valued, and included. Purpose: To put lived experience at the centre of systemic change on local and national levels through best-in-class co-production and advocacy. To develop the capabilities and skills of people living with learning disabilities; autistic people; and people with mental health needs in Surrey and Sussex, enabling greater choice and control over their lives. To support disabled people in identifying and tackling societal barriers to equality, such as in healthcare, housing, employment and travel, through peer-led campaigns and awareness training. Aims: To break down barriers to equality, such as health and transport inequalities. To ensure that people with disabilities have a voice in key decisions affecting their lives. To empower individuals with learning disabilities, autism, and mental health needs in Surrey and Sussex to gain the skills and capabilities to make informed decisions, exercise greater autonomy, and achieve increased control over their lives.
