Recipient Org: Description We support over 300 forcibly displaced families/households in the Surrey borough of Elmbridge and surrounding area. Each week we run two English classes and two drop-in hubs in different locations, where people fleeing war or persecution can access our support and advice. We signpost to and collaborate with other local services, some of which send representatives to our hubs to meet with our clients on a regular basis. We have over 80 active volunteers, many of whom work one-to-one providing English language tuition, homework help, employment mentoring or help with integration and orientation in the community. We provide a casework service for higher-need individuals who may have multiple disadvantages such as experience of complex trauma, domestic abuse, or limited education in their home country. This service is delivered by dedicated, trained integration workers and supported by volunteers. We also operate a small emergency hardship fund, and provide material donations (such as furniture, laptops and bikes) and practical help with house moves when needed. A further important part of our work is to foster greater understanding between newcomers to the area and local residents, by sharing the human stories and experiences that help build empathy and connection within our community. This includes regular activities and social events to support integration and to bring people from different backgrounds together, and outreach at local fairs and community events. Our long-term goals are that each individual we work with feels welcome and held by the community of which they are now part, enabling them to reach their full potential and become fully thriving and contributing members of society. We are passionate in our belief in common humanity and in our wish to support the vulnerable and to build bridges rather than walls. We are the only charity in our local area, one of very few in Surrey, that supports forcibly displaced people of all ages and from all backgrounds. We were established in 2016 as a local community group (registered as a charity in 2018) and have extensive networks and support in the area, as well as good relationships with the local council and other relevant organisations. We believe that this means that we are uniquely placed to meet the needs of displaced people in and around Elmbridge.
