Recipient Org: Description Every day, 12 children and young people will hear the devastating news that they have cancer. When they hear this news, normal life stops. CLIC Sargent aims for everyone under 25 with cancer, and their families, to get the help they need during their cancer treatment and beyond. From diagnosis, CLIC Sargent’s specialist care teams step in to provide a range of support tailored to each young cancer patient and their family, being there for them at the point of diagnosis, throughout treatment and beyond. CLIC Sargent provides six key packages of support: When the doctor says “cancer”  From the moment of diagnosis, we are there. Our specialist care teams help children, young people and families make sense of the diagnosis and ensure that information is presented in an accessible way. They provide emotional support, expert clinical care and guidance so that families feel less overwhelmed, and more able to cope. There’s no place like home  CLIC Sargent helps to minimise the practical impact of a cancer diagnosis. Our nurses and social workers provide outreach care, so that medical procedures and support can be provided at home when possible, allowing them to maintain a sense of normality.  We also have ten Homes from Home across the UK close to principal treatment centres that families can stay in free of charge whilst undergoing treatment, allowing them to stay together during the toughest of times and to save a huge amount on travel and accommodation costs. Our Homes also give them an opportunity to meet other families who are also going through cancer treatment, allowing them to share stories, advice and offer each other support. Helping young lives thrive, not just survive  CLIC Sargent works hard to ensure that cancer is not the defining moment of a child or young person’s life. We offer opportunities to maximise educational and employment skills and give young cancer patients a chance to connect with each other and share experiences. This helps them regain their confidence and be inspired to think beyond cancer. Cancer costs   We support families with the financial burdens of a cancer diagnosis, with our research showing that families spend an average of £600 extra per month when their child is receiving treatment. To help families deal with the many extra costs of a child’s cancer, and often a loss of income, we provide grants and help families to get the benefits and other support they are entitled to. When a child or young person dies  Sadly 1 in 5 young cancer patients are told their cancer isn’t curable. We offer them end of life and bereavement support. We help young cancer patients come to terms with their prognosis, prepare for death and think about how they want to be remembered. CLIC Sargent’s support does not end once a child or young person dies. We make sure we are there for every family that needs us during this devastating period.
