Recipient Org: Description | Re-engage exists to reduce loneliness and social isolation amongst older people aged 75 and over. Loneliness is not only miserable, but it is damaging to physical health and mental wellbeing, increasing the risk of illnesses such as heart disease, dementia and depression (NHS). Shockingly, we have come across older people who have not spoken to another person in as long as three weeks. The cost-of-living crisis is making life harder for older people, with no means to increase their income many are cutting back on socialising and travelling. We, therefore, expect increasing numbers of older people to access both our free services, which provide companionship and friendship: 1) Our monthly social groups, typically in the form of tea parties, offer older people a chance for a change of scenery and regular afternoons of conversation with peers and volunteers of all ages. 2) Call companions is our telephone befriending service, ensuring older people who are unable to leave their homes remain connected to the outside world through a regular chat with their dedicated friendly volunteer. |
