Recipient Org: Description | The Trust acquired ‘the Endeavour’ in 2001 in a derelict condition. Her restoration was completed in 2005 in time for her to participate in the 65th anniversary of the evacuation of allied troops from Dunkirk. She was one of six Leigh cockle boats that took part in ‘Operation Dynamo’ among the 693 ‘little ships’ used. ‘Endeavour’ was built in Leigh as a cockle boat in 1924 and spent most of her working life in Leigh. ‘Endeavour’ is prominently displayed in Leigh and the Trust has introduced a community and educational programme. This programme includes visiting local schools, telling the ‘Endeavour’ story and her importance to local history. This presentation includes a PowerPoint which includes slides of her early role fishing, her participation in the rescue of allied troops from Dunkirk in 1940, the restoration project and her participation in the commemorative returns to Dunkirk in 2005, 2010 and 2015. We also present to local community groups giving many talks each year. We also participate at local events including Leigh’s annual maritime festival and the regatta. Newsletters are issued quarterly and are sent to all members, supporters and some local schools and community groups. They are available at the Heritage Centre in Leigh and on our website. The significant current and future role of the Trust is to help to ensure that Leigh's important role in 1940 is told, via the Endeavour story, to schools so that it survives in to future generations. |
