Recipient Org: Description Supporting people affected by epilepsy. We aim to be a local point of contact for people with epilepsy. To provide information and support where it is needed to help those with the condition feel that they are not alone. To point people with epilepsy in the correct direction to enable them to obtain the support they need and are entitled to. This may be on benefits, employment, information to take to the medical practitioner, safety in and outside the home, services available - indeed any matters which may make their lives easier or less stressful. We aim to hold an awareness and information day each year, advertising it well in the hope of reaching anyone with epilepsy or with an interest in the condition to come and have a chat. This often includes professionals or people who volunteer with a variety of support groups as well as family members, friends and neighbours of those with epilepsy. We support local events with an information stall at events such as in 2017, the carnival and Jo Cox Day. A telephone line is listed under Epilepsy to provide a contact point for any who wish to remain anonymous or have need of a listening ear other than at our events. From time to time we take information to local surgeries for the dual purpose of reminding medical staff of our existence and to attract the attention of patients with epilepsy. We accept that most who benefit from contact with us have no wish to join the branch but some join the band of folk who help by giving one hour of their time each year to assist with our annual collections. We hold two. One in November is a street collection in Saffron Walden and the other in the spring comprises station collection at Audley End and Bishop's Stortford. The proceeds of these collections are sent to the National organisation to help support, information services, without which we would not be able to keep up to date, and research. As we are few in number we also support Epilepsy Action, Essex Forum in larger ventures such as conferences. We exist to improve the lives of everyone affected by epilepsy. Epilepsy changes people's lives - we are working to ensure those changes are as few and as painless as possible
