Recipient Org: Description Hoarding is one of the most visual mental health disorders yet it is a very hidden need. A complex dilemma that can make the person a prisoner of their mind as well as their home. Your Living Room was established in 2015 and has since been serving their apprenticeship learning directly from the experts...Dr Randy Frost, author of STUFF quotes…. 'that it’s ironic that those who struggle the most with its severe consequences and are able to share their experiences, are the experts' Through our client’s experiences and shared personal history, this practical ‘hands on’ learning has provided our organisation and its practitioners with a detailed frontline insight into a world that is consuming, isolating and relentless. To date we have received 670 referrals of which two thirds we have engaged with in various ways : initial assessment, interim discussion, attendance at a user-led support group, supported them through the decluttering process, professionals meetings, support for their families/guardians. In 2013 saw the recognition of Hoarding Disorder as a Mental Health condition and the review of The Care Act in 2014 identified hoarding as a form of ‘self-neglect’, ‘abuse’ yet society is still very much on the back foot, yet it affects 1 in 20 ( almost 70,000 people in Essex alone). Your Living Rooms aim is to continue to provide a non judgemental person-centred decluttering service, promote a semi-therapeutic approach to engage with our clients, support them through their anxieties that often prevent them being able to engage in the process and help them achieve their goal of making their homes as functional, safe and organised as possible with minimal anxiety. This complex need requires our clients to feel in control at all times as the persons mental wellbeing needs to be the main focus. 98% of Your Living Room clients have some form of mental health support need and require a wraparound person-centred approach. Providing a smoother access to mental health support if appropriate and/or social care intervention is a process that needs to be reviewed as the current system is not always seamless or timely and therefore has a detrimental effect on the client. There is also a danger that focusing on the clutter will exacerbate the clients anxieties and will create a further negative impact their mental health wellbeing. Your Living Rooms focus of support is 70-80% for the person and 20-30% for the clutter but often the situation can be very challenging for the external professional, as a natural reaction is to focus on the clutter because of the dangers for the person in their home environment. The situation possibly has already reached a crisis point when statutory services visit takes place and the volume of clutter will have created restricted access or exit routes, a fire hazard and often lead to unsanitary conditions escalating into attracting vermin. The multi-agency approach with Your Living Room, social care and mental working together simultaneously should ensure that the person-centred approach is identified as a pathway to their recovery and needs to be established as soon as possible for the client. Additional activities: Your Living Room provides three free funded User-led support groups in Essex, helping members cope with the shame and the anxieties that evolve from this disorder. Each group provides on average between 600-650 hours of support per year. (this figure excludes the volunteer support given by the members of the group for each other’s crisis situations). The User-Led groups aim is to support the member before they engage in the decluttering service, during the process of decluttering whether self-induced or with a professional, seeking guidance and confidence from the group to continue, beyond the decluttering process, as clients need support to maintain their newly organised home as majority are keen to avoid a relapse as these groups provide a wraparound support for their vulnerable peers. We also provide support for families, guardians and carers. Your Living Room has been commissioned since 2017 by Essex County Council to deliver Hoarding Awareness training for safeguarding leads and social workers throughout Essex, focusing on how to engage, essential communication skills and supporting the process throughout. A stigma is still attached to people that have hoarding tendencies, as the first thing that a professional normally encounters on entering a property could be a pungent smell of faeces or black mould, dust can make the person cough and the visual turmoil together creates a challenging situation to assess with the reaction impacting on the client. Our preparation/training/shadowing helps the professional to focus on the person without any bias, on their vulnerability, their isolation and their mental wellbeing. Our CRM database provides us with essential statistic e.g. 67% of our clients have been victim to either crime/scam or fraudulent activity due to their vulnerability and isolation. We have been invited to apply for a research grant through Essex University that will further develop our database and expand the information we require for future research opportunities. Obviously cost is a major factor but enforced/blitz clear-outs are very dangerous to the mental health and well being of the client and can increase anxieties and suicidal feelings.(68% of people that experience an enforced clearance have increased suicidal thoughts....quote) A home takes years to fill so can take longer than a few days or weeks to solve and reorganise the home. Your Living room is therefore looking to develop further the preventative approach work with client/user participation and guidance on the board going forward.
