Recipient Org: Description BYPC is a youth organisation providing a safe haven for all young people aged 11-18 and up to 25 for special needs, including many that are disadvantaged or socially isolated, where they are loved, listened to and respected. Our objective is to build their confidence and develop their self-esteem to the point where they are able to make friends, return/remain in school, obtain qualifications and be suitable for employment. Thus, establishing a more purposeful and worthwhile lifestyle. Braintree has little to offer young people outside the pubs and clubs with their inherent dangers such as crime, drugs and alcohol. Our aim is to offer an alternative that diverts them away from these problems and gives them a chance to avoid such temptations. Through our drop-in and focused sessions, we provide a full range of activities, events and training that challenge them to achieve and become confident in themselves and able to establish relations with new friends and mix in society without feeling threatened, and away from crime. Our programmes include indoor and outdoor activity from simple board and computer games that test their mental and physical dexterity to sports, physical fitness, healthy living and eating, and cooking workshops along with stretching activity that takes them out of their comfort zone and proves that they can achieve in even the most testing of circumstances. This might include, mountain climbing, abseiling, canoeing or river trekking. We also run awareness and prevention sessions on drug and alcohol avoidance along with establishing a respect for others and the community in general. We work closely with local schools and have good relations with police, allowing us to address young people with problems at an early stage, either by offering specific support or referring them to departments more able to help them.
