Recipient Org: Description Ferriers Barn is a day care centre in Bures, Essex. It was set up 46 years ago for adults with disabilities. 1: Ferriers Barn was established to give our members a safe, educational and fun place they can learn new skills and build their confidence. 2: They can make new friends and feel part of a larger community. 3: They feel valued and important. 4: The respite we provide to their families and carers with is essential to their mental health and well being. 5: We enable our members to see past their disability, showing and encouraging them to learn new things, try things they didn’t feel possible and improve their mental health and well being by empowering them. 6: Social interaction at Ferriers Barn is immensely important. Some of our members start their journey on our specially adapted bus. We travel all over Colchester and Essex collecting people from their homes to bring them to us. The bus journey is all part of the fun, there is constant interaction and banter. 7: Social isolation is an issue for a lot of our members and we strive to eliminate that. 8: Classes at Ferriers Barn are lead by a Tutor, who is qualified in their chosen field. They are supported by carers and volunteers. Members can discuss and contribute to ongoing projects and choose what they would most like to do. Their opinion is always valued and respected and it is from them that the projects are formed. 9: We offer classes in pottery, woodwork, art, craft, gardening, using our newly built specially designed accessible garden. There is something for everyone. The outcome for our individuals is that they are included in a wide range of activities they would not normally have access to. 10: We provide a home cooked two course hot meal every day, provided by our qualified cook. We cater for all our members dietary requirements and constantly change our menus according to seasons. Thus looking after their nutritional needs. 11: Not only do we offer social inclusion, a sense of value and opportunities for new skills to our members, we ensure our central ethos also emulates out to the staff, volunteers and the local community. We are a charity that employs local staff, most of whom work one on one with our less able members. We have volunteers that come from the surrounding area. We are involved with the local community and this leads to their support for us and our members. 12: We arrange lots of fundraising events in which we get huge amounts of support. 13: We organise trips out for our members, integrating them with the local community, so breaking down barriers, and so giving our members a sense of belonging and value. This also gives our community a local charity they can affiliate with and become close to. 14: We a supported by the local grant giving organisations. . 15: Ferriers Barn is an excellent example of social value in this community.
