Recipient Org: Description We are Southend in Sight – the Community Services Division of Southend Blind Welfare Organisation, Registered Charity No. 1069765. The charity has been running since 1958 with the aim of meeting the needs of the local visually impaired community. We provide social clubs and activities to reduce isolation. We offer advice and support on low vision equipment to give people independence in their own home. We operate a full time Eye Clinic Liaison Officer service for people at Southend Hospital to signpost people at the time of their diagnosis. We offer emotional support to ensure people who are coming to terms with losing their sight are not alone. We support those who need help with form filling for their benefits (i.e PIP and Attendance Allowance) to ensure they know what financial help is available and they are receiving what they deserve. We run a free loan scheme which gives people the chance to try out expensive equipment that helps them stay independent at home. We offer technology advice to give people confidence using mobile phones, tablets and accessibility features. We are developing our children's services so that anyone of any age can be helped in their hour of need and to ensure they are not living alone with their sight loss. Our visually impaired volunteers are role models for those that come to us for support as they understand the challenges being faced. We offer a drop-in service from our Centre in Westcliff and our volunteers and Sight Loss Advisor are on hand to help anyone that visits – this could be support with magnification, cooking aids, talking books, diaries, pens, access to work, school support, social activities, phones and IT. We are a very friendly team and offer a “can do” approach to living with sight loss. This is inspired by our many visually impaired volunteers who speak to people from personal experience – which makes all the difference.
