Recipient Org: Description Uttlesford Citizens Advice provides non-judgmental advice to help people deal with a diverse range of problems, including debt and money advice, benefit support, housing issues, community health worries, relationship law and emergency support. We aim to 'provide the advice people need for the problems they face' and also try to improve the policies and practices that affect people's lives. We are free, confidential, impartial and independent. We operate offices in Saffron Walden and Great Dunmow and outreach services in Stansted and Thaxted. Our service is delivered primarily through 83 dedicated and well-trained volunteers. In 2018/19 we helped 2,537 clients; many with complex, multi-dimensional problems that take time, patience and skill to resolve. Although it's important that we are available to everyone, with limited resources we aim to signpost the most able people to self-help options where appropriate, allowing us to focus on supporting the more vulnerable clients. As a result of this strategy, many of our clients' problems can take several appointments to work through. 47% of our clients state that they have a long term illness or disability; 34% of these describe themselves as having a mental health illness. We promote our service through parish magazines and websites, local press, social media and ad-hoc outreach activities and take part in awareness campaigns such as energy efficiency, scam awareness and winter resilience. Our services are promoted on www.uttlesfordfrontline.org.uk , an online service that facilitates secure referrals to local health and well being support. However, we know that many people still struggle to access the support they need to improve independence or quality of life as a result of illness, mobility or caring issues. Loneliness and isolation are also significant problems in our rural area, where public transport is scarce and fares can be prohibitively expensive; the most vulnerable are often the hardest to reach. To address these issues we offer telephone appointments and a home visit service which supports people living with disabilities to access benefit and money advice. A small internal survey of our clients revealed that 30% were uncomfortable using, or did not have access to the internet. With many services moving online, our Benefit Take-Up, Help to Claim and core services support clients who suffer from digital exclusion or who find it difficult to claim benefits or apply for additional support due to illness, poor literacy or computer skills, aiming to address the low benefit take up rate in Uttlesford. Going forward we feel our role will progressively be to help clients bridge the digital divide as services increasingly expect their clients and customers to transact in this manner. A practical example of this issue is demonstrated by the elderly couple who came to our office to ask for help with a Blue Badge application because the on-line application was simply impossible for them to access without a smart phone or computer. We helped them by taking their picture, scanning supporting documents and completing the on-line form on their behalf.
