Recipient Org: Description Colchester Toy Library aims to be a supportive and welcoming community space for families and volunteers where children can come and play and borrow toys. We promote learning through play and children benefit from a great variety of toys, helping to develop new skills. Their tastes though are not always predictable and toys can be expensive. Hence the idea of a lending service. Our Charity believes that all children should be able to have a range of play experiences no matter what their circumstances or individual needs. We therefore lend a diverse range of educational and high-quality toys, including specialist toys for children with additional needs, to families at a very low cost. We welcome all members of the community such as other charities, playgroups, childminders and foster carers. We hold stay and play sessions which provide a safe environment where children can explore our soft play area and discover new exciting toys and take them home if they wish. Our sessions are also a place where parents and carers can come and socialise with other likeminded adults and we aim to make the Toy Library a community base where adults feel they can find support and friendship. We have a selection of larger toys and play equipment for children's parties and events which are available for hire. This service is very popular especially in the summer months. Going forward we hope to bring back our additional sessions for families with children with additional needs such as sensory needs, learning difficulties, autism and physical difficulties. These sessions involve a range of games and activities which aim to support children’s communication skills and physical development. They also aim to encourage parent’s confidence in playing and interacting with their child. The groups also welcome siblings who can join in and learn new activities to do with their brother or sister. We currently have restricted funding to expand our special needs equipment, however this is on hold until further funding is obtained to secure our future.(see additional information sheet) The Colchester Toy Library is run by volunteers who support the families and children. We seek to encourage volunteers who may experience difficulties such as social isolation, physical or mental health conditions, learning difficulties or find regular employment difficult. The Toy Library provides adults with opportunities to experience a work-based environment, whilst building friendships and confidence. Our environment as supportive and welcoming for volunteers with additional needs so that everyone has an equal opportunity to get involved. The Charity also aims to promote environmental awareness through providing an opportunity for re-using and sharing items as an alternative to buying new. This is especially important with toys as they are often made of plastic and are not kept for a long period of time. In this way we believe we are beneficial to both the local and wider environment.
