Recipient Org: Description Brentwood Council for Voluntary Service (BCVS) is a local independent voluntary organisation and a registered charity, formed and run by local voluntary groups to promote, support and develop the effectiveness of voluntary action. Information, development services, community events, funding advice and training workshops are being offered to over 118 voluntary and community groups and local residents within Brentwood Borough. BCVS is the only umbrella organisation of all third sector groups and organisations in Brentwood. We organise and facilitate 3 networking events that attract over majority of our groups and a number of practical workshops targeted at developing the skill-base of local groups. All our services are offered to third sector groups free of charge. The Aims The aim of BCVS is to provide support and advice to all voluntary and community organisations (VCO) in the Brentwood borough who are working in the sector to develop communities of Brentwood. To equip and empower VCOs who are in need of practical advice on development and funding issues enabling them to successfully deliver their community projects/services. This is achieved by providing VCOs one-to-one support to identify the needs of communities, develop appropriate project proposals, identify appropriate funding opportunities and assist them with writing successful funding applications. We also provide tailor made training workshops covering various areas of development and fundraising topics as a response to identified needs within the local voluntary sector, hold 3 networking events that attract 60-70 visitors/groups. Monthly funding e-bulletins and bi monthly community newsletters are also produced offering group news, publicity, up-to-date changes in legislation, training, funding and voluntary opportunities, etc. We also provide volunteer recruitment in the borough - our volunteer information service has details of the latest volunteer opportunities of local groups and regularly updated Volunteer Essex platform available online. The Activities BCVS offers help and support through the following activities: • Development Services - assistance to new voluntary groups with getting started, including charity registration; • Funding Advice and Information - Advice and information on fundraising, including one-to-one support to identify appropriate funding opportunities, assistance with writing successful funding applications, advice on how to improve supporting documentation to make funding bids more attractive to funders, tailor made training workshops about fundraising; • Training - BCVS organises free training programmes and workshops as a response to identified needs within the local voluntary sector and to increase community resilience; • Volunteer recruitment – Volunteer Essex Brentwood information service has details of the latest volunteer opportunities of local groups and support for local residents interested in volunteering; • Social Isolation & Community Village Support - BCVS organizes villages outreach activities – Senior‘s Information & Coffee mornings in the local parish centres. The aim of this activity is to provide information, help and advice to older people in these local villages that may feel isolated due to their rural location and lack of public transport; • Staying Well This Winter - To provide help for residents whose health and wellbeing is at risk during cold weather. The purpose of this activity is to both prevent crises and respond to them in relation to cold-related illnesses and deaths amongst frail elderly and other vulnerable groups of people; • Mental Health First Aid training - Brentwood has been keen to increase of provision of Mental Health First Aid Skills in local communities. BCVS, in conjunction with PROVIDE facilitates and delivers training to local voluntary/communities organisations in Brentwood; • Weight management - BCVS, in conjunction with Anglian Community Enterprise (ACE) launched a free Community Weigh-in taking place at The Baytree Shopping Centre. The aim of the project is to support people to achieve a gradual, long term weight loss by providing free weigh-ins, sup-port and encouragement, and accessing the 'My Weight Management' online programme. The whole programme is completely free, and run by BCVS volunteers; • Walk & Talk Group - supporting the work of My Weight Matters programme to encourage participants to be more active; • Information provision – e-bulletin on funding news and opportunities, bi monthly newsletter offering group news, publicity, up-to-date changes in legislation, training, funding and voluntary opportunities, mail shots, etc; • Representation - through effective networking BCVS is able to represent the views and concerns of the local voluntary organisations to other agencies.
