Recipient Org: Description As a small national charity, MS-UK is here for anyone affected by multiple sclerosis, to empower them to live healthier and happier lives by improving the understanding of MS and providing support where it is needed most. We promote choice by providing people with the information and support they need to live life as they wish to; whether that be through prescribed or alternative medicines, complementary therapies, lifestyle changes, a mixture of these or none at all. We don’t rely on pharmaceutical funding so offer unbiased information and support in all we do. MS-UK services include a national helpline (1330 interventions in 2018) that gives emotional support (unique among MS charities) as well as comprehensive information by phone, webchat and email. New Pathways magazine is written largely by people affected by MS with over 2000 subscribers and we know from feedback it is an invaluable resource for many who struggle to read screens or are isolated; it's also available in other formats. Our unique Choices booklets had 80,000 downloads last year and are now available in print, and being sent out free on request to MS health professionals and many MS Therapy Centres. Josephs Court is a wellness centre supported by the National Community Lottery Fund and supports over 100 people, most from Essex, who attend twice or more weekly. Our newest service offers telephone Counselling as is helping 250 people p.a. Last year MS-UK directly helped around 6000 people. Our work also helps family members, carers and MS health professionals, so an additional 30,000+ people benefit from services. Josephs Court has a growing range of specialist equipment to support physical health and wellbeing including a balance machine enabling wheelchair users to stand, improving circulation and muscle tone; resistance equipment, Thera bikes and a Functional Electrical Stimulation machine, all helping maintain or improve circulation, muscle strength and tone. People with MS often attend with family members or carers which strengthens the social support for everyone affected by MS. We are increasingly focussed on broader mental health and wellbeing support and the introduction of mindfulness courses and complementary therapy treatments, along with advice on diet and nutrition is proving highly beneficial.
