Recipient Org: Description Lido background and heritage Brightlingsea Lido was built in 1932 and remains the only publicly accessible lido in Essex. It is situated right on the tidal estuary and is an integral part of Brightlingsea’s traditional Western Promenade, which includes an adjacent boating lake, a tidal salt-water paddling pool, beach huts, gardens, a playground and skate park. The lido was previously refurbished in the 1970s, but in recent years allowed to run down and by the end of 2017 was threatened with imminent closure, by Tendring District Council. However, it has remained a much-loved feature of the town, and the prospect of retaining it as a community asset generated considerable local interest and support. Following consultation, in March 2018 a 50-year lease was transferred to Brightlingsea Town Council, and Brightlingsea Lido established as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. In September 2018 the lease of an adjacent outward-facing kiosk selling snacks was also transferred to the Town Council, and has been redeveloped as a larger café, orientated inwards towards the poolside. The Charitable objects of Brightlingsea Lido CIO are, to: - promote for the benefit of the inhabitants of Brightlingsea and the surrounding area the provision of facilities for recreation or other leisure time occupation of individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances or for the public at large in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving the condition of life of the said inhabitants" additionally we aim to: - Keep the Brightlingsea Lido open for the local community and surrounding areas for future generations. - Manage, maintain and enhance the Brightlingsea Lido as a strong, vibrant facility. - Work towards Brightlingsea Lido being a fully sustainable, inclusive and accessible resource for all users. - Attract visitors to the town of Brightlingsea by virtue of the Brightlingsea Lido, thus contributing to economic growth and regeneration in the area. - Contribute towards the preservation, maintenance and enhancement of the heritage of the Brightlingsea Lido - Provide the Brightlingsea Lido as a social benefit which is affordable and provides good quality facilities in the town of Brightlingsea for local people and the general public. - To work in partnership with Tendring District Council, Brightlingsea Town Council and other relevant and sympathetic organisations to achieve these objectives. As part of our commitment to Brightlingsea Lido becoming an inclusive and accessible resource for all users, the first round of access improvement were begun during the first seasons trading (2018). These improvements were possible thanks to start-up funding from Tendring District Council and Brightlingsea Town Council, together with very significant donations of materials and time from the community. The following access improvements have been made during Phase One of the development plan: a. Installation of accessible ramped main entrance to the site and pool side. b. The redesign of the existing male and female changing room facilities to incorporate a large accessible toilet/shower facility c. In early 2019, installation of handrails alongside existing stepped access to the main pool. These improvements have significantly improved access onto and around the site. We are now aiming to complete Phase II of our access improvements. This includes 2 key items of accessibility equipment, whose combined installation will achieve our ambition to make the restored Brightlingsea Lido a highly inclusive facility and exemplar of its kind (restricted only by the topographical constraints of the site itself). Whilst complying with current legislation our aim has always been to go further and to set exemplary standards. We hope that this small, community lido can be a flagship of its type, with inclusive access creatively considered and designed-in throughout its refurbishment, build and management. . Successful fundraising for the equipment detailed here will enable us to be able to say - for the first time in its history - that Brightlingsea Lido genuinely welcomes all-comers.
