Recipient Org: Description Based in Shropshire, The Movement Centre is a charity providing a specialist therapy for children, called Targeted Training. Our aim, through Targeted Training, is to give every child with a movement disability the opportunity to reach their full potential. Giving children the best chance to reach milestones and goals is important to us, as all children that we see have a lifelong disability. If we can give them as much strength and control as possible then their life can only be better. The children who come to The Movement Centre have a disability that affects their movement control, such as Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome or Global Developmental Delay. This means they may be unable to lift their head, to sit without support or find it challenging to stand or take their first steps. Targeted Training draws on specialist physiotherapy and bioengineering. It has been developed at The Movement Centre over the last 20 years, using clinical trials, audit and research. It is different from other therapies because it works by placing a child in an upright position and it uses specialist equipment to provide stability and support. Through a course of Targeted Training a child is 3-4 times more likely to gain control of their movement than with regular physiotherapy alone. Children can gain head control, so they can interact with their family; it can help children develop the skills to sit unaided, so that they can play with their friends. For some children it can enable them to walk, which means they can be far more independent.
