Core Costs (360G-JuliaRausingTrust-a1KSr00000MkDTC)

£120,000

Working with teaching partners (e.g. colleges), ALT recruit and train volunteers who complement formal learning in the classroom by providing one-to-one support for adult learners to gain confidence to become successful readers, and to improve their life chances. During weekly one- or two-hour meetings with adult learners, volunteer Reading Coaches provide the time and space to encourage the learners to practice what they are taught in the classroom, maintain their motivation to keep learning, and support them to improve their self-esteem, confidence and skills. Focusing on their individual needs, Reading Coaches work with individuals outside of the classroom to help to check learners? understanding, and to build their confidence in reading. Volunteers also lead small groups of learners in informal learning sessions focusing on developing the ability to navigate literacy challenges in everyday life, to boost confidence and life skills, as well as foster an overall appreciation for reading. This funding will support their core costs as ALT aim to scale up their work over the next three years from supporting 150 in 2025 to 250 in 2026 and rising to 500 by 2028. This work will all take place in London.
