£300,000
Recipient Organisation

This project would provide support to deliver steady, sustainable expansion of their in-prison training over 2026-28 teaching people in prison to be highly competent craftspeople through bespoke, individual teaching. They accomplish this by sending experienced volunteers into prisons nationwide to teach prisoners to create high-quality needlework products sold to the public and commissioned by heritage organisations. By the end of 2028 they aim to move from training 500 prisoners to 750 annually, providing classes in 26 prisons supported by 120 volunteer instructors. The work strands are: 1. Stitching classes providing paid needlework and training for prisoners in their cells to create beautiful hand-embroidered products, working with 620 cell-workers in 2026, 650 in 2027 and 680 in 2028. To do this they will train a further 36 volunteers working in teams of 4 to support 9 new stitching group (8-15 participants in each). 2. Training workshops: paid production on sewing and embroidery machines in two prison workshops, training 50 workshop stitchers in 2026, 60 in 2027 and 70 in 2028 plus developing a workshop in a new prison requiring a new staff member.
