Recipient Org: Description Evelyn Oldfield Unit: Supporting Refugees and Migrants to Build More Empowered Communities. The Evelyn Oldfield Unit was founded in 1994 with the original aim of providing specialist assistance for Refugee and Migrant Community Organisations. Having identified gaps in provision leaving targeted communities marginalised and excluded, we have, over the past 8 years, expanded to provide both frontline and capacity building services. During 2017-2018, we supported 571 individuals and 274 Refugee and Migrant Organisations (RMOs). With our help, refugees and asylum seekers: • Have equal access to resources and services, and the same benefits as mainstream communities • Gain a ‘voice’ and foster self-help through peer-to-peer support as volunteers and community leaders • Progress along personal development pathways to gain access to sustainable and fulfilling employment • Receive support from a sector that provides quality services Our current projects are: (1) EOU Solicitor Pro Bono Project & IAG Casework Inc. Immigration Advice. We offer free legal advice [fully qualified solicitors] to individuals from marginalised communities [36 advice surgeries delivered to 75 people in 2017-18]. We are OISC / AQS accredited. As of the 1st of April 2018, we have increased our weekly surgeries by a factor of four as part of an ongoing effort to meet demand. (2) Enhance Project: capacity building project, working with small RMOs, delivering training such as Financial Management and Fundraising, provision of desk space, one-to-one support. As part of this we offer ‘The Community Agenda’, which is aimed at engaging RMOs in current dialogue that facilitates integration and the making of recommendations for the future [274 supported 2017-18]. (3) The E3 Project [“London is Home”] engages BAMER individuals with low levels of spoken English. The free programme aims to reduce isolation, enhance digital competency and communication, while also providing English language skills. [377 learners and 18 volunteer teachers supported during 2017-18]. (4) “Research for Action and Influence”: research & presentation skills accredited course [OCN level 3] provided for refugee and asylum seekers. Run with University of East London and OLIve programme, this is the only course of its kind in the UK. This aims to promote a voice for the students, so that they can advocate for themselves and their communities. (5) IBAA – Islington BAMER Advice Alliance. We lead a consortium of RMOs to improve the quality of advice-giving to BAMER individuals in Islington, with the aim of improving partnerships and facilitating cross-community collaboration in the hope of sharing good working practices. (6) ESOL Classes: 150 learners over 2 years, with a waiting list of nearly 50 learners; accessible classes e.g. for individuals with no recourse to public funds The EOU is refugee-led, through both our trustees and management team to ensure we are fully inclusive of the communities we serve. Decisions are made collaboratively, with projects user-led as much as possible.
