Recipient Org: Description StreetDoctors is an award-winning charity which prevents and reduces youth violence in the UK. We train young people in emergency first aid and to understand the consequences of violence. We work with those at risk of violence in partnership with youth offending institutions, the Police, schools, and youth centres. Our training is delivered by our movement of young healthcare volunteers - nurses, paramedics, and medical students. Our approach was designed in collaboration with young people at risk, criminal justice staff, and medical professionals to educate young people about the consequences of violence. The training centres young people as capable of making positive choices and becoming lifesavers themselves – seeing themselves as part of the solution to violence rather than part of the problem. They learn what to do when someone is unconscious or bleeding, how to communicate with emergency services, and the long-term consequences of knife injuries and other types of violence. Our trained medical volunteers deliver a course of two interactive sessions, offered either face-to-face or via an online package, to 11-25 year olds working with 300 UK partners. The sessions enable young people to evaluate the decisions they may make to reduce their involvement in violence. Our end of session evaluations consistently demonstrate our success in changing young people’s responses to violence. As a result of training 94% say they understand the consequences of violence, 95% say they know what to do if someone is bleeding/unconscious and 85% say they would be willing and able to act if first aid was needed. This impact data demonstrates how skills-based interventions like ours are highly beneficial. We also run Stepwise, a deeper youth engagement programme where young people gain a first aid accreditation, learn how to deliver training sessions to other young people, and find out more about healthcare careers.
