Recipient Org: Description Make a Move is a wholly inclusive charity which combines music and movement, talking therapy, relaxation techniques and mindfulness to achieve its charitable aims. The basis for success is based on the accumulation of scientific research which demonstrates that music and movement share a dynamic structure that supports universal expressions of emotion, and that physical exercise or movement combined with music produces more positive effects on cognitive function across age groups, (including in elderly people) than exercise or music alone. Music allows people to move to a beat as a group, creating a shared emotional experience which has proven to be very powerful in the lives of the people with whom Make a Move works.Make a Move designs and runs customised sessions and projects for disadvantaged and vulnerable groups from children aged birth to adults, young and old. The demographic of the groups dictate the elements of the work, but music and movement are a part of everything we do. In our almost six years since beginning, we have successfully established the following: a rolling programme of work to reach all primary schools in Bath & North East Somerset (BANES) over a five year period; formed partnership working with the NHS for women suffering from Post-Natal Depression; developed a project across Day Care Homes in the local area for older people suffering from Dementia. We continue to seek opportunities where our model of working will benefit people suffering from social, emotional and mental health difficulties. The founder of the charity, Michelle Rochester was a dance teacher for nearly twenty years and worked extensively in schools throughout Bath & North East Somerset (BANES) and Bristol. She is joined by Sarah Haddow, a qualified Movement Psychotherapist with vast experience of working with mothers and together they have forged new paths of integrated working with a range of therapists and movement practitioners. They have jointly developed and modified their ways of working to arrive at a method of using music and movement to improve the mental health and wellbeing of the people who participate in any one of Make a Moves projects.
