Recipient Org: Description We are the only organisation supporting individuals from the settled Gypsy and Traveller community locally. With two Community Workers assist individuals with learning disabilities, physical disabilities or mental health issues, to access a range of services, such as local colleges, housing advisors, community dentist and health services. Within the settled Gypsy and Traveller community there are high levels of illiteracy and a disproportionate number of people with learning disabilities and with physical disabilities. This community in the New Forest is severely disadvantaged in comparison to other Hampshire residents as a result of social isolation, discrimination, the geography of the New Forest and the transport costs required in accessing mainstream services. With twenty years experience, our organisation is in the unique position of being trusted by community members. The work we undertake improves self esteem, access to mainstream services and the take up of benefits and health services of community members. We have around 170 clients on our database. First Steps help the community to embrace and be proud of their Romany Gypsy heritage, helping them explore their culture and heritage by accessing events, films and plays.
