Recipient Org: Description | We committed to supporting people who face civil and family courts without legal representation, known as Litigants in Persons (LiPs). We operate from courts in 22 locations across England and Wales including Bristol. Traditionally, access to justice has been exercised by the public through the services of a lawyer. However, cuts to legal aid and closure of advice centres have created ‘advice deserts’ and stripped away a vital element of support for a fair and just legal system. Those hardest hit by the cuts are some of the most disadvantaged. LiPs are now representing themselves in cases of enormous importance in distressing circumstances and often against barristers. Their troubles are compounded by additional disadvantages e.g. unemployment, language and poor health. We train volunteers to provide practical and emotional support so that when LiPs get to court, they feel better prepared, know what they want to say and can participate effectively in the process. This gives them a far greater chance of accessing justice. The help we provide is wide-ranging e.g. providing legal information, explaining what would happen in court, helping people to fill out complicated forms/create bundles and supporting them to plan what they would say to the judge. |
