Recipient Org: Description | As a community-led charity organisation, we have been supporting the local communities, in particular those of Senegalese and Gambian descents (and their families), as they are at high risk and facing increased hardship, unemployment, homelessness, lack of integration, language barriers, family breakdown, mental problems and other challenges. With COVID-19, we have been offering online educational activities (replacing our after school club) to support children/young people whose parents are uneducated or do not speak English and providing online events on mental health and well-being. As a result of an increase in membership and an exponential growth in demand for our services during the lockdown; our post-lockdown focus is to provide educational (mainly English language support), promote the benefits of physical activities on health and to combat social isolation, loneliness and lack of integration. We will be running after school and homework clubs, additional language to support the families who have recently relocated to the UK and whose children can barely speak English. They are in the mainstream schools but require additional support which the council has not catered for. We have an outreach team of 2 volunteers who liaise with the local schools. We will also be delivering employability support for the disadvantaged and the unemployed and employment workshop (job seeking, CV writing, job applications support). There will also be social activities (stay and play for families with children, family events, educational trips and sport activities). Since the relaxing of the COVID rules, we have secured the hiring of a large hall at Filwood Community Centre to run all our activities. |
