Recipient Org: Description To help young people in the UK to enjoy new adventures, to experience the outdoors; interact with others, gain confidence and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. 1st Keynsham Scouts is one the country's largest and most active Scout Groups, with over 280 members in 2 Beavers Groups, 3 Cubs Groups, 3 Scout Groups and an Explorers Group running during term time. Our young people are offered the chance to participate in a wide range of activities accessible to all, which include life skills, swimming, sailing, traditional scouting skills, first aid, craft, cookery and sporting activities. We also own a large piece of woodland where we are able to camp, run wide games and introduce our young people to the great outdoors in a range of ways - dam building, den and shelter construction as well as wildlife spotting and conservation. For many of our young people this is their first/only experience of camping and enjoying nature as well as learning basic survival skills. During Scout meetings new friendships are made and strengthened and skills and activities are introduced which challenge and broaden horizons. 19% of our young people consider themselves to have a long term limiting illness or disability and we do everything we can to make our activities programme accessible to all, without compromising on the quality and variety of experiences available. We find that for the majority of our young people social media and the internet consumes vast amounts of their time. We try to encourage our young people to participate in real life activities where they are building face to face relationships and understanding how to work together, as well as providing them with exercise and physically challenging situations such as sailing, canoeing, hiking and team games. Scouting also promotes the importance of Community, and each section of Scouts participates in community activities such as "Clean for The Queen", litter picking, painting railings and planting flower beds. We aim for our young people to feel pride in themselves, their local and Scouting Community, as well as their country. By teaching and supporting our young people to feel connected to their community we are helping to prevent anti-social behaviour and develop self-esteem and confidence - vital for the development of socially responsible adults of the future.
