Recipient Org: Description Dorothy House provides compassionate care and support for patients and families affected by life-limiting illness. Our focus is on quality of life, helping patients to live well and die well. Established in 1976, we have expanded and evolved over the last 45 years to become highly regarded experts in palliative and end of life care. We now support over 3000 people each year across a 700 square mile region, including Bath and North-East Somerset, and parts of Wiltshire and Somerset. Our specialist teams provide medical and nursing care, as well as much needed psychological, social, spiritual and practical support. We help patients cope with challenges faced throughout their illness and support them to have a peaceful death. We also offer vital psychological, emotional and practical support to patients’ families and carers both pre and post-bereavement. Our services include an Inpatient Unit, Community Nurse Specialists, Hospice at Home, Day Patient Services, Therapies (including Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Complementary Therapy, Creative Therapy), Psychological Support, Family Support, Bereavement Support, Peer Support groups, a 24 Hour Advice Line and a pioneering Research and Education Programme. Our services are provided free of charge whenever and wherever they are needed: at home, at our Hospice in Winsley, online, or in the community. We have a vision of delivering a society where death is a part of life and are working tirelessly to continually develop our services to ensure that everyone has access to outstanding palliative and end of life care. With a rapidly ageing population, increasing numbers of people living with complex life-limiting conditions and the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the UK healthcare system needs the specialist services of the hospice movement more than ever before.
