Recipient Org: Description The Maritime Volunteer Service is a UK registered charity providing education and training in maritime-related ashore and afloat skills to recognised national and international standards. MVS promotes the preservation of life and property within the maritime environment, serves local communities especially in times of need or emergency and takes part in resilience exercises ashore and afloat. MVS has developed a national Pathway curriculum to define the training requirements for its uniformed members. The four education and training branches within the Pathway cover Seamanship, Engineering, Operations Management and Community Response (CR). CR uses MVS volunteers' maritime-related skills to assist and work alongside the Emergency Services and other organisations in response to incidents and emergencies affecting our local communities, especially those involving water. The Bristol Unit of MVS trains its members in accordance with the MVS Pathway and is a member of the Avon Area Voluntary Agencies Group. The Unit has recently been called upon by B&NES to assist boat owners following a sudden drop in River Avon water levels in Bath, and by Bristol City Council to take part in harbourside patrols on summer evenings to prevent people entering the water of the Harbour. MVS Bristol is expanding as members of CRT, a local community resilience volunteer organisation also working with the local council civil protection teams, join the Unit. The new members are bringing their experience in community resilience to MVS, along with shoreside rescue and lowland search skills, experience with local flood barriers and the setting up of rest centres. In return, the new members are being trained in the other MVS skills areas. The enlarged MVS Bristol Unit will provide improved water-related resilience capabilities to support communities throughout the Bristol, B&NES, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire areas in response to incidents or emergencies.
